These old Coltrane improvisations are such unique, spiritual examples of exploring time, energy, development, harmony... I've had them deep in the recesses of my subconscious since high school, and for their raw creativity, I will continue to revisit them for the rest of my life, I'm sure. Nevertheless, with a melodica, it's a great chance for me to take part in the time and shapes of them, blowing it through this two-octave wind instrument without thinking, but just feeling, letting the memory sing and channel on its own ... These solos in particular I was curious to hear the clusters of melodica notes go by in swing and sync with what Trane was doing... For exercise over the many years I've always loved taking part in these historical treadmills of articulation and originality... Their strength and soul will forever push me on in my own ways. Instead of going to a gym for exercise, I target the breath and rhythm of improvisation as a means of daily cardiovascular exercise... be it on trombone, drums, piano, melodica... We all need it, to get the blood and spirit flowing... our evolving musical body beyond category...
